Casa O’Gorman

Casa O’Gorman was built in the ’30s by Juan O’Gorman, a Mexican painter and architect, in the functionalist style. He built two studios for his close friends Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo and one studio for himself.

I visited the casa on my trip to Mexico City this August. What stood out for me was the bright cobalt blue and terracotta orange colours, their severe shapes contrasted against their environment and beautiful simplicity. Casa O’Gorman is far from the historic or downtown area but well worth the visit.

” O’Gorman’s design is based on his belief that the functionalism of the house should not be compromised for aesthetics, so all functional elements – including the striking concrete staircase – are in sight.”
